Description
Here is a long description for Arcenate 30 mg Injection (IM/IV):
Arcenate 30 mg Injection is a parenteral antimalarial medication that contains artesunate, a water-soluble derivative of artemisinin, used primarily for the treatment of severe malaria, especially Plasmodium falciparum infections. This medication is administered either intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM), allowing for rapid absorption and action, which is critical in life-threatening cases of malaria.
Artesunate works by producing free radicals inside the malaria parasite, leading to damage of parasite proteins and membranes, which ultimately results in the parasite’s death. Its fast-acting nature makes it the drug of choice in severe or complicated malaria, especially in areas with high resistance to other antimalarial drugs like quinine.
Indications:
- Treatment of severe falciparum malaria, including cerebral malaria
- Used in adults and children, including infants and pregnant women (2nd and 3rd trimester), under medical supervision
- Often followed by a full course of oral antimalarial therapy such as artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT)
Dosage & Administration:
- Typically initiated as a 30 mg dose given IV or IM, repeated at 12 and 24 hours, and then once daily
- Total dosing and duration are based on patient weight and clinical condition
- Must be prepared and administered under the guidance of a healthcare professional
Important Notes:
- Artesunate is generally well-tolerated but can cause transient hemolysis (especially delayed hemolysis after treatment), nausea, dizziness, or allergic reactions
- It is crucial to monitor hemoglobin levels and renal function during treatment
- Should not be used as monotherapy for uncomplicated malaria
Storage & Handling:
- Comes as a lyophilized powder that needs to be reconstituted with a provided diluent before injection
- Store below 25°C, protect from light
