Description
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunits of bacteria, inhibiting their protein synthesis. This binding prevents the movement of tRNA peptidyl molecules, causing the inhibition of peptide chain elongation and termination of protein synthesis. Due to its high concentrations in the respiratory, genital, and urinary tracts, azithromycin is effective in treating bacterial infections specifically in these areas.
