Description
zithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, preventing the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the ribosome. This inhibition interferes with the translocation of peptidyl-tRNA from the aminoacyl-tRNA site to the peptidyl-site, resulting in accumulated peptidyl-tRNA and inhibited peptide chain formation. This macrolide also induces the formation of abnormal ribosomal complexes, leading to the death of bacterial cells.

- Gonorrhea 1000 mg (2 tablets) as a single dose
- Pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, ear infections 500 mg (1 tablet) on the first day, then 250 mg (half a tablet) daily for the next 4 days
