Description
Composition:
Each film-coated tablet contains:
- Glimepiride 1 mg
- Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg
Description:
Gluconormet 1/500 mg is a combination oral antidiabetic medication used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. It combines Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin secretion from the pancreas, with Metformin, a biguanide that reduces hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity. This dual mechanism offers effective blood sugar control for patients who do not respond adequately to monotherapy.
Indications:
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults
- Used when blood glucose levels are not adequately controlled by diet, exercise, or monotherapy with either glimepiride or metformin
- Can be used as part of a comprehensive diabetes management plan
Dosage and Administration:
The usual dose is one tablet daily, preferably with breakfast or the first main meal. Dosage should be individualized based on blood glucose levels and patient response. Always take under medical supervision.
Mechanism of Action:
- Glimepiride: Stimulates pancreatic beta cells to release insulin.
- Metformin: Decreases glucose production in the liver and improves glucose uptake in muscles.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Risk of hypoglycemia, especially in elderly or those on calorie-restricted diets
- Monitor renal and liver function regularly
- Not suitable for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
- Use with caution in patients with heart or kidney conditions
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, stomach upset, headache, and mild hypoglycemia. Rare but serious side effects may include lactic acidosis (from metformin) and severe hypoglycemia (from glimepiride).
Storage:
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
