Ribavirin is a synthetic nucleoside analogue which has shown in-vitro activity against some RNA and DNA viruses. The mechanism by which ribavirin in combination with Peginterferon alfa-2a or Interferon alfa 2b exerts its effects against HCV is unknown.
Ribavirin in combination with Interferon alfa-2b and Peginterferon alfa-2a is indicated for the treatment of patients 3 years of age and older with chronic Hepatitis C (CHC) who have compensated liver disease. Ribavirin monotherapy must not be used.
