Description
Product Name:
Vancomycin Injection 500 mg
Pack Size:
1 Vial (500 mg per vial)
Generic Name:
Vancomycin Hydrochloride
Pharmacological Class:
Glycopeptide Antibiotic
Product Description:
Vancomycin Injection 500 mg is a sterile, bactericidal antibiotic used intravenously for the treatment of serious infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other resistant strains. It is often reserved for infections that are resistant to other antibiotics, making it a critical agent in hospital and clinical settings.
The vial contains 500 mg of vancomycin hydrochloride powder, which must be reconstituted with an appropriate diluent before intravenous infusion.
Indications / Uses:
Vancomycin Injection is indicated for the treatment of:
- Serious infections caused by MRSA
- Severe infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species
- Endocarditis, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, septicemia, and skin and soft tissue infections
- Clostridium difficile colitis (oral form is preferred, but IV form used in severe systemic infections)
- Patients allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics
Dosage and Administration:
- The dose and duration depend on the severity of infection, renal function, and patient weight.
- Typical adult dose: 15-20 mg/kg every 8-12 hours, infused intravenously over at least 60 minutes to reduce the risk of infusion-related reactions.
- Dose adjustments are necessary in patients with impaired renal function.
- The powder vial should be reconstituted with sterile water for injection or suitable diluent and then further diluted before IV administration.
- Monitor serum vancomycin levels to ensure therapeutic concentration and avoid toxicity.
Mechanism of Action:
Vancomycin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of cell wall precursors, preventing cross-linking and leading to cell lysis. It is effective primarily against Gram-positive bacteria.
Side Effects:
Common:
- Red man syndrome (flushing, rash, hypotension during infusion)
- Nephrotoxicity (kidney damage)
- Ototoxicity (hearing loss)
- Phlebitis at injection site
- Fever, chills
Serious:
- Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
- Neutropenia (low white blood cells)
- Thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)
Warnings and Precautions:
- Infuse slowly (over at least 60 minutes) to avoid Red Man Syndrome
- Monitor kidney function and serum levels regularly
- Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment, hearing loss, or elderly patients
- Not for intramuscular use
- Use only under strict medical supervision
Drug Interactions:
- Increased nephrotoxicity risk with aminoglycosides, NSAIDs, or loop diuretics
- Avoid concomitant use with other ototoxic drugs if possible
- Careful monitoring required when used with neuromuscular blocking agents
Contraindications:
- Known hypersensitivity to vancomycin or formulation components
- Use with caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other glycopeptides
Storage Instructions:
- Store vial below 25°C
- Protect from light and moisture
- Keep vial in original packaging until use
- Use immediately after reconstitution or as per stability guidelines
Regulatory Classification:
- Prescription only medicine (POM)
- Hospital/clinical use
Summary:
Vancomycin Injection 500 mg is a potent glycopeptide antibiotic reserved for serious infections caused by resistant Gram-positive bacteria. It requires careful dosing and monitoring due to potential nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. Proper infusion technique and patient monitoring are critical for safe and effective therapy.
