  • Description

Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that belongs to the tetracycline class. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Specifically, it binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, preventing the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA to the ribosomal acceptor site. This action disrupts the addition of amino acids to the growing peptide chain, effectively halting protein synthesis and preventing bacterial growth and replication. Its mechanism is bacteriostatic, meaning it inhibits the growth and reproduction of bacteria rather than directly killing them. Doxycycline is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as certain protozoa.

Precautions & Warnings

Following are the precautions and warnings for Doxycycline 100mg Capsule:

Should not be used in individuals with a known allergy to doxycycline or other tetracycline antibiotics.

Avoid use during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, as it may affect fetal bone and teeth development.

Contraindicated in children under 8 years of age due to the risk of permanent tooth discoloration and enamel hypoplasia.

Caution is advised in individuals with a history of esophageal disorders, as doxycycline can cause esophageal irritation or ulcers.

Should be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment, as it may affect these organs.

Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi; monitor for signs of secondary infections.

Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight or UV light while taking doxycycline, as it can increase the risk of photosensitivity reactions.

Drug Interactions

Following are the drug interactions for Doxycycline 100mg Capsule:

Concurrent use with antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, as well as iron supplements, may reduce the absorption of doxycycline, decreasing its effectiveness.

Interaction with oral contraceptives may reduce their efficacy, increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy.

Concurrent use with blood-thinning medications such as warfarin may increase the risk of bleeding; monitoring is advised.

Co-administration with retinoids (e.g., isotretinoin) can increase the risk of intracranial hypertension.

Combining doxycycline with penicillin antibiotics may reduce the effectiveness of penicillins.

Alcohol and certain medications that induce liver enzymes (e.g., phenytoin, barbiturates) may reduce the concentration and effectiveness of doxycycline.

Food Interactions

Following are the food interactions for Doxycycline 100mg Capsule:

Consuming dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt may reduce the absorption of doxycycline, potentially lowering its effectiveness.

Avoid taking doxycycline with high-calcium foods, as calcium can bind to the medication and hinder its absorption.

It is recommended to take doxycycline with a full glass of water to prevent irritation of the esophagus.

Taking doxycycline on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals, enhances its absorption and effectiveness.

Avoid alcohol consumption while taking doxycycline, as it may reduce the medication’s concentration in the bloodstream and efficacy.

Storage/Disposal

Doxycycline 100mg Capsule should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, to maintain its efficacy. Keep the medication at room temperature, typically between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), and out of reach of children and pets. Do not store it in the bathroom or any humid area, as moisture can degrade the capsules. For disposal, avoid flushing the medication down the toilet or pouring it into a drain unless specifically instructed. Instead, follow local disposal guidelines or consult your pharmacist or healthcare provider for safe disposal methods to ensure it does not harm the environment.

Laboratory Screening

Doxycycline 100mg Capsule typically does not require routine laboratory screening or monitoring. However, in certain cases where there are concerns related to treatment or underlying conditions, the following may be considered:

Regular monitoring of kidney and liver function, especially in patients with pre-existing kidney or liver conditions, as doxycycline can affect these organs.

If you experience any unusual side effects such as severe gastrointestinal distress, dizziness, or signs of liver dysfunction (e.g., yellowing of the skin or eyes), consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

Patients taking doxycycline for prolonged periods may require regular blood tests to monitor for potential effects on the blood count (e.g., low platelet or white blood cell count).

It is important to ensure that the medication is not causing any significant adverse effects, particularly in individuals with pre-existing conditions. Always consult your healthcare provider if you are unsure or experiencing any unexpected symptoms.
