Description
Composition:
Each tablet contains:
- Meloxicam 15 mg
Description:
Melfax 15 mg is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) containing meloxicam, used to relieve pain and inflammation in various musculoskeletal conditions. It works by inhibiting the enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) responsible for the formation of prostaglandins, which cause inflammation, pain, and swelling. Melfax is particularly effective in managing conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
Indications:
- Relief of symptoms in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
- Treatment of ankylosing spondylitis
- Musculoskeletal pain and inflammation
- Short-term relief of acute pain due to sprains or injuries
Dosage and Administration:
The recommended dose is one tablet (15 mg) once daily, preferably after meals to minimize gastric irritation. In some cases, a lower dose (7.5 mg) may be sufficient. Duration of use should be the shortest possible to minimize side effects.
Mechanism of Action:
Meloxicam selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) more than COX-1, reducing the production of prostaglandins involved in inflammation and pain, while minimizing gastrointestinal side effects compared to non-selective NSAIDs.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Not recommended for use in patients with active peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, or severe liver/kidney disease
- Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular risk
- May increase risk of heart attack or stroke with long-term use
- Avoid concurrent use with other NSAIDs
- Not recommended during late pregnancy
Side Effects:
Common side effects include stomach pain, nausea, dizziness, and headache. Serious but rare effects include gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney dysfunction, and allergic reactions.
Storage:
Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
