Description
Product Name: Calcijex Injection 1 µg
Dosage Form: Sterile Injectable Solution
Strength: 1 microgram per 1 mL
Packaging: 25 ampoules of 1 mL each
Active Ingredient: Calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol)
Route of Administration: Intravenous (IV)
Description:
Calcijex Injection contains calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D₃, used primarily to manage hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels) in patients undergoing chronic renal dialysis. It plays a crucial role in calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism by promoting intestinal calcium absorption and modulating parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels.
Indications:
- Management of hypocalcemia in patients on chronic renal dialysis
- Treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in dialysis patients
- May be used off-label for conditions involving vitamin D deficiency when oral administration is not feasible
Mechanism of Action:
Calcitriol increases serum calcium levels by enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium, reducing bone resorption, and suppressing PTH secretion.
Administration and Dosage:
- Administered intravenously under strict medical supervision
- Dosage individualized based on serum calcium, phosphate, and PTH levels
- Close monitoring is required to avoid hypercalcemia
Storage:
Store at controlled room temperature (15–30°C). Protect from light. Use immediately after opening an ampoule; discard unused portion.
Caution:
- Monitor serum calcium and phosphorus regularly
- Risk of hypercalcemia and soft tissue calcification
- Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease or those at risk of vitamin D toxicity
