Overview:
ONTIV 4mg Injection contains Ondansetron Hydrochloride, a selective 5-HT₃ receptor antagonist used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, or other medical conditions. Administered via IV or IM, this injectable form provides fast and effective control of symptoms, particularly in acute care or hospital settings.
It is widely used in oncology, anesthesiology, and emergency medicine due to its rapid onset of action, excellent safety profile, and minimal sedative effects.
Mechanism of Action:
Ondansetron blocks serotonin (5-HT₃) receptors both in the central nervous system (CNS)—specifically in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) of the brain—and in the gastrointestinal tract, where serotonin is released during chemotherapy, surgery, or illness. By blocking these receptors, it prevents the vomiting reflex.
Indications:
- Prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV)
- Radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
- Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV)
- Acute nausea/vomiting in emergency settings
- Suitable for patients who cannot tolerate oral medication
Dosage and Administration:
- IV/IM use only under medical supervision
- Typical adult dose: 4 mg injected immediately before chemotherapy or surgery
- May be repeated or followed with oral doses depending on the clinical need
- Must be administered slowly if given IV to avoid adverse cardiovascular effects
Dosage may be adjusted based on patient weight, age, and clinical response.
Common Side Effects:
