Overview:

ONTIV 8mg Tablet contains Ondansetron Hydrochloride, a highly effective antiemetic used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, or other medical conditions. Ondansetron works by blocking serotonin (5-HT₃) receptors in both the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract, which are responsible for triggering the vomiting reflex.

ONTIV is commonly prescribed in oncology, surgery, gastroenterology, and general practice, making it a widely trusted medication for controlling nausea and vomiting across various clinical settings.

Mechanism of Action:

Ondansetron selectively blocks serotonin (5-HT₃) receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) and on vagal nerve terminals in the GI tract, which play a key role in initiating nausea and vomiting. This targeted action makes it especially effective for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV).

Indications:

  • Prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV)
  • Radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
  • Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV)
  • Nausea and vomiting of other medical causes, including gastroenteritis or medication-induced symptoms

Dosage and Administration:

  • Adults (standard dosing): 8 mg taken 1–2 hours before chemotherapy or surgery, followed by 8 mg every 8–12 hours as needed.
  • May be taken with or without food.
  • Dosage may vary depending on the indication, severity of symptoms, and patient response.

Common Side Effects:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Rare: QT prolongation (in high doses or at-risk patients)

Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with cardiac conditions, particularly those prone to QT prolongation or taking other QT-prolonging drugs.
  • Monitor electrolytes in patients with dehydration or electrolyte imbalance.
  • Not recommended for use in children under 4 years without medical advice.

Drug Interactions:

  • Caution with other QT-prolonging medications (e.g., certain antipsychotics, antibiotics).
