Description
Tiotropium, a long-acting muscarinic antagonist, exerts its mechanism of action by selectively binding to and blocking M3 muscarinic receptors located in smooth muscle cells of the airways. By inhibiting these receptors, tiotropium prevents the activation of smooth muscle contraction, which is typically induced by the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
