Sacubitril and valsartan work together to improve heart function and reduce symptoms of heart failure. Sacubitril blocks the action of neprilysin, an enzyme that breaks down beneficial natriuretic peptides. By blocking neprilysin, sacubitril increases the levels of these peptides, which helps the heart function better. Valsartan blocks the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that constricts blood vessels and increases blood pressure. By blocking angiotensin II, valsartan relaxes blood vessels and reduces blood pressure.
Warnings
Common side effects include headache, cough, and diarrhea. Other side effects may include low blood pressure, angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), and kidney problems. Rarely, sacubitril-valsartan may cause serious allergic reactions, liver problems, or angina (chest pain).
